Projects Details

The New York City Police Academy project is located on a 35-acre campus in College Point, Queens, New York. The first phase of the project includes 730,000 square feet of classrooms, offices, locker rooms, auditoriums, gyms and training facilities all contained within an academic facility, physical training facility and a central utility plant.

STV and Turner Construction Company created a joint venture to provide the construction management and build services for the project which was designed by Perkins & Will Architects with Langan Engineering & Environmental Services serving as the EOR.

3D BIM Modelling and detailing of approximately 9,000 tons of structural steel for a New Police Academy building for the New York Police Department (NYPD).

Projects Challenges/Highlights

The highlights of this project included the following:

  • Advance Clash Detection for Trades;
  • MEP Coordination process undertaken during pre-construction to uncover any building system conflicts with Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing or Fire Protection systems using 3D models integrated into one Master Model that can facilitate interference checking or clash detection;
  • On Site Utilization of the BIM model to aid the erection process.
